Give This Brochure to Women in Your Church. A new brochure that serves as a great PR piece for our District LWML is now available for you to download from the brochures section of our Publications page. You may want to give it to a friend, relative, pastor, or anyone who would like to know more about our terrific auxiliary for Lutheran Women in Mission.
You might think of it as a 'one-on-one' encouragement, with facts to pique their interest. It also could be put in the tract rack at your church or on a display table on LWML Sunday.
It could be handed out at a society meeting, zone board meeting or zone rally, with the suggestion that each person invite a non-LWML person to your next event. You can give them the brochure so they can take it home and learn about the LWML before they
come.
The brochure is to be printed on both sides of the paper and then folded into thirds.
Eyeglass Clinics Completed; 1891 Pairs of Glasses Distributed!
All 24 members of the two SWD LWML Eyeglass Mission Teams are well and happy after 4-1/2 days of clinics in Puerto Rico during which they distributed 1,891 pairs of glasses and shared the love of Christ with 1,541 people. Because MOST Ministries does not bring bifocals on such trips, some people need both distance and reading glasses.
In addition, the teams gave away hundreds and hundreds of sunglasses to adults and children. As the teams arrived at the two clinic locations each day, they began with prayer in a circle and then opened the door to a long, long line of people waiting. They also closed each day with prayer. Some Puerto Ricans asked the Leaguers, "Why are you here?' They always replied, "To share the love of Jesus!" They felt blessed to be able to witness to so many people
Although team members are joyful about their experience, they are tired due to the heat (96o in the daytime and 85o at night). Friday will be a time for rest and relaxation; a few have chosen to visit San Juan for the day. Then they'll fly home to Wisconsin - and they'll be available to speak to groups about the trip.
All team members are returning with dozens of unforgettable experiences. One of the men in the group described this as "an awesome life-changing experience." The memories include:
1) A 92-year-old woman with eyes so bad that she could barely see. After her glasses were fitted and she discovered she could read again, her face just glowed! Then a team member gave her a small Spanish Bible. Immediately the elderly woman wanted to read the 23rd Psalm. The team member offered to help the woman find it, but she refused to give up the Bible until the interpretor made it clear that it would be given back to her. The team member will never forget the woman's joy as she then began to read that favorite passage after being unable to read fine print for so long.
2) A boy who had an accident at school and therefore had no sight in one eye. He just beamed when he received glasses that enabled him to see well with his good eye.
3) A nine-year-old who was translating for her grandmother was wearing a bracelet with a cross on it. When the team member asked the child if she believed in Jesus, the child replied, "Yes, I believe in God, and He's my real father." The team member responded, "He's my father too, so what does that make us?" The child answered, "Sisters!" and they enjoyed a warm hug.
Teams Sing at Service; Clinics begin Monday
In a phone call from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, Sunday evening (Nov. 3), LWML District President Carolyn Blum reported that all is going well. (Her cell phone works there!)
The teams worshipped in a bilingual service this morning at Prince of Peace, the sponsoring congregation. Hymns were sung, verse by verse in Spanish and then in English. DCE Michael Tanney, the missionary in charge of the congregation, preached on 1 John 3:1-3. At the close of the service, the teams sang, "Jesus, Send Us on Your Mission." This hymn was written especially for the 2007 national LWML convention by Pastor Dean Nadasdy.
The church has a nice building. The basement (intended for a parochial school that so far has not materialized) houses a government-funded Head Start program. The teachers are excited to be in this fine location. The rent from the program is paying off the building loan. The church will do chapel services for the school and Christian parenting programs for the families.
Monday, Nov. 4, the Eyeglass Clinics begin. One team will be on duty from 8 a.m. to about 4 p.m. The other will serve in a different location from 2 p.m. through 8 p.m. Members of the local congregation will also be on hand to help witness and welcome those who come for eyeglasses, making this venture a true partnership of reaching out with God's love.
Because the teams must supply most of their own meals, they went to Sam's Club to get some groceries. The store was as crowded as department stores are in Wisconsin at Christmas. Lines were very long, so they did not purchase ice cream or ice cubes, fearing the items would melt before they got out of the store. They would have liked some though because it's very hot in Puerto Rico right now. Continue to keep them in your prayers.
Teams Arrive in Puerto Rico, Safely but a Bit Late
We started the Eyeglass clinics today after getting into our sleeping accommodations last night at 3 a.m. The plane was two hours late and the van reservations didn't turn out as they expected.
We handed out many glasses today, including children's sun glasses. And, we witnessed about Jesus!
It's very hot here, but we had no effects from the hurricane. Praise God!
Everyone is well and sends their greetings - and many, many thanks for the prayers and for sending so many eyeglasses....we have 4,600 pair with us here!
God's blessings to all,
Carolyn Blum (on behalf of the Eyeglass teams)
Retreat Is Full! Registration Closed!
Chairman Nancy Schwalenberg reports that the Fall Retreat Oct. 26-27 at Wintergreen Resort in Wisconsin Dells is full to overflowing! All available space is filled in the ballroom for the sessions, and the hotel is setting up extra tables and chairs for us. All the sleeping rooms are sold out.
Because of this "overage," registration has been closed, and even some walk-in may need to be turned away. (This reminds me of the situation in Sioux Falls, where registrations for the national convention were closed this year because they were full too.)
While this does pose logistical issues for the retreat committee, what a JOYOUS 'problem' to have--you might say it is an 'overage' of JOY!! The committee is working diligently to accommodate everyone; however, some may need to be turned away, due to the hotel having a maximum number of people they can accommodate in the meeting rooms. The committee asks for your understanding and patience! Extra materials have been printed.
Just like in Sioux Falls, we can look upon this as an opportunity to witness to the hotel staff--to show our love and patience with each other and with them. Christian love in action!
I, personally, am looking forward to this retreat where we will celebrate the closeness (both literally and figuratively!) of our LWML sisterhood, and where we will also celebrate mission outreach. I feel the overwhelming response to this retreat is indicative of the interest our women have in spreading the Gospel. All praise to HIM for giving us this opportunity!
--Carolyn Blum
LCMS Mission Counselor
To Speak at Fall Retreat
Gary Thies of St. Louis, who serves as Mission Development Counselor for the LCMS, will speak on "The Master Calls for You" Friday evening and Saturday, Oct. 26 and 27, at Wintergreen Resort, Wisconsin Dells.
A highlight Friday evening will be a birthday party, focussing on 60 years of memories and missions for the SW LWML. Each attendee will receive a booklet of memories.
The retreat emphasis is based on Matthew 9:37 and 38 - "Then He said to His disciples, 'The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.'"
And, a special treat is planned - our new national LWML president, Jan Wendorf of Grafton, will be present, and attendees will have an opportunity to meet, greet and hear her.
Bible Study Leader for the retreat will be Rev. David Totsky, District LWML Junior Counselor. His study will focus on “Missions: Past, Present and Future.”
A registration form may be found in the Fall Retreat brochure on this website's Publications page or in the Mission Lamp. Register today!
Check-in will open Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. with the program starting at 7 p.m. There will be no Friday dinner, allowing participants to choose a restaurant of their choice. Many are located near the resort.
Friday evening fellowship - Following the Friday evening birthday celebration, the women may enjoy fellowship, visit the displays or swim in the resort pool.
Food! - Saturday morning a breakfast buffet will be served from 6:30 - 8 a.m. It will include cereals, seasonal fresh fruit, french toast with spiced apples, scrambled eggs, sausage links, baked ham, au gratin potatoes, freshly baked pastries, toast, coffee, tea and orange juice. The cost is $9.
Lunch will be served at 12 noon. There will be two choices, each costing $9:
--Roast sirloin of beef au jus, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetables du jour and fresh baked rolls.
--Baked chicken breast with mushroom wine sauce, rice pilaf with vegetable du jour and fresh baked rolls.
Both choices will be served with a garden salad, choice of dressing, fruit cup and coffee, tea, soda or milk.
Saturday sessions - For those arriving on Saturday, registration will open at 7:30 a.m., as will the exhibits. The morning session will begin at 8:30 a.m.
Bring Ingathering Items for Madison IFC
With 4,000 international students on the campus of UW-Madison, the International Friendship Center meets an important mission function. To make students feel welcome, the Center can always use drip coffee, flavored teas, styrofoam cups (8 oz.) and hot chocolate mix.
So, those attending the Fall Retreat are asked to bring any of the above for the ingathering. For international students, the Center offers traditional and contemporary worship services, Bible studies, a home-cooked meal, choir and instrumental groups, social events, active service opportunities, a study area and rec room, and the opportunity to talk one on one with Pastor Mark Schumm about any personal problems.
Why Should You Include National LWML Convention In Your Summer Plans? 1) National LWML conventions are unforgettable mountaintop experiences - even when they take place on the plains of South Dakota! And it won't be closer until 2015 (you can cheer on our district as it competes with Iowa to host the event then.) 2) You will have the joy of worshipping with thousands of Lutheran women from all over the U.S. and abroad. You can even sing in the convention choir if you desire. 3) The Bible Studies and Communion Service will be uniquely inspiring. Proclaimer at the Communion services will be the Rev. Dr. Dean Nadasdy, LCMS 3rd Vice President. He's an author of preaching resources, pastor of a large Minnesota congregation, guest seminary professor and has taught in Latvia and Hungary. Bible Study leader will be Dr. Mary Manz Simon. She's the author of "Little Visits with Jesus" and writes a column, Ahead of the Curve, for focus on the Family. The host of Front Porch Parenting, a radio program that airs daily on 300 outlets, Dr. Simon is a trend tracker for publishers and family entertainment companies. As a speaker, she flies as mnay as 100,000 miles annually. 4) You'll hear outstanding speakers. The 2007 keynoter will be Terry Kieschnick, wife of LCMS President Gerald Kieschnick. 5) You'll get first-hand reports on exciting missions from Rev. Dr. Robert M. Roegner, executive director of the LCMS Board for Mission Services, Rev. Ray S. Wilke, founder and president of Orphan Grain Train, and Rev. Khurram and Cynthia Khan, missionaries with POBLO (People of the Book Lutheran Outreach). Pastor Khan has started a Lutheran Leadership Training Institute in Pakistan, funded by an LWML mission grant. 6) You'll be there to support our Wisconsin teens who, as members of Friends Into Serving Him," will present a skit as part of Friday evening's entertainment. Also featured that evening will be Erin Bode, a singer whose musical group has performed nationwide and played two European tours. 7) You can load up your car with Ingathering "Gifts from the Heart" to benefit agencies in Sioux Falls as well as Orphan Grain Train. See lists of needed items in the Winter Lutheran Woman's Quarterly or the LWML website (www.lwml.org). 8) You can help others by participating in Servant Activities - build for Habitat for Humanity, sorting clothing for Orphan Grain train, assembling quilts, complete cough pillows, assemble baptismal banners for Native American Missions, or donate blood. 9) Be among the first to hear of our new grants and new officers. Cheer on Jan Wendorf of South Wisconsin who is a nominee for national LWML president. Enjoy the display area where you can learn about dozens of Lutheran missions and agencies. 10) The convention makes a great family vacation - your children will enjoy Camp ROCK and trips to an aquatic Center, a Science Discovery Center and a zoo. Enroute you can sightsee at interesting places like the Eros Data Center, which coordinates our country's program of photographing earth and its buildings from satellites.
Sioux Falls Hotel Set;
All SWD Attendees
Welcome at Caucus
For the Sioux Falls convention in June, our bus riders received their first choice hotel...the Country Inn & Suites! This hotel was our first choice for many reasons: it's in a seemingly quiet neighborhood, close to the quaint 'old town' area and serves a free continental breakfast each morning.
If you are going to the convention and would like to stay in the same hotel, do sign up soon, as the remaining rooms are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. All the registration materials are available on the national LWML website at www.lwml.org and in the winter Quarterly (the large-sized one).
It's a One-Day Drive!
Sioux Falls is an easy drive from Wisconsin - make it a family vacation and sightsee along the way. A national convention is always so inspiring - too good to miss!
If you are at the convention, whether you are a delegate or not, you are welcome to attend the SWD caucus Thursday evening, June 21, at 9:30 p.m. (after the convention's opening worship service). It will be in the Riverfront meeting room of the Country Inn & Suites Hotel., 200 E. 8th St., Sioux Falls.
Bring Your Cameras
This is your opportunity to gather as a group, hear announcements and updates, reconnect with friends, meet our delegates, our ethnic women, special guests and our young women reps.
Bring your camera - this might be the only time we will be together to take a group picture! There will be no formal district pictures taken this year, due to space limitations at the convention center....so if anyone wants to take a picture of the group at our caucus, bring your camera. This may be the only time the SWD people are together as a group!
For the latest district news, see the Leaders' Info page of this website!

Do You Have a Story to Tell?
Your help is sought by national LWML as it prepares to produce a DVD to help members intentionally reach out to others with Christ's love on a one-to-one basis. It will be used by districts, zones and societies to encourage members to share their faith personally with individuals who do not know the Lord. The DVD will be launched at the 2007 national conventnion in Sioux Falls. For this purpose, the Faith Talk Task Force is looking for "Heart Stories" to include in the presentation. These are real-life stories from people whose lives have been impacted by another person (preferably a woman) who spoke a Christian message to them. This could be someone who came to faith as a result of a woman sharing her faith, or who was brought closer to the Lord through an acquaintance, friend or family member speaking to them. These do not have to be LWML women, but it is hoped that they will be members of the LCMS. The stories will have to be told in less than two minutes each. (The Task Force will work with the person to distill the story into this time limit if necessary.) Some stories will be selected and the teller videotaped for inclusion on the Faith Talk DVD. Others may be included in additional written resource material. Every effort will be made to include individuals of varying ethnicities, ages, and backgrounds. If you have such a story, e-mail it to President Carolyn Blum now or no later than Sept. 15. Be sure to include the name and contact information of the person who did the witnessing and a short synopsis of the story. "Keep your minds and hearts working to come up with a few good stories that can serve to be 'idea-starters' to share with others," says Carolyn. "Maybe other LWMLers will be inspired to do something similar to how you allowed God to act through you to witness God's love and saving grace for all people." To send an e-mail to Carolyn, go to the Personnel page on this website, and click on her name.

St. John's, West Bend, is mobilizing people to travel to Mobile, AL, where our South Wisconsin District has been asked to partner with Our Savior's Lutheran Church there to help Katrina survivors. Kits that are ready and are delivered to Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 462 Meadowbrook Dr., West Bend, Saturday, between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m., will be taken to Mobile this week by members of St. John's Church. (The LWML Board of Directors meets at Pilgrim Saturday, so contact your zone president today, Friday, Sept. 16, if you have boxes of kits ready to go.) For directions to the church see the website www.pilgrimlutheran-westbend.org. Be sure to label the boxes as to their intended recipients: babies, children, adult women, adult men. This method of shipment saves you shipping costs. The South Wisconsin LCMS is covering the costs of gas for the vehicles of the St. John's volunteers. Further directions regarding the kits are available on this website on the News Page. Kits still may betaken to the Bultmann Trucking or to Pilgrim later, as the need is ongoing. Boxes left at these sites will be picked up by the St. John's workers and taken to Mobile by teams going there in subsequent weeks.
